Day 3

After getting off to a late start we checked out Devils Tower. It wasn't quite as ominous as it appeared last night in the fog. After getting back on the highway we decided to cut through the beautiful big Horn Mountains on our way to Yellowstone. But first it was time to sample a new fast food place - Taco John's. Wow! It was bad. Really bad. Stale chips, small tasteless tacos and salsa that stayed with me for the remainder of today's trip. Then it was time to go into the mountains. Max got to drive his first mountain pass (9960 ft) and after a little bit of hesitation he mastered it. Quite well I might add. Cutting corners and finding the perfect line, like he has done this many times before. My hiking excursion didn't wind up to be that successful. As I tried to position myself to get the shot of Max sitting above the remaining snow field, I slipped and landed with my backside in the mud. $%&#! After stripping in the parking lot on top of the pass to get into clean clothes, we went on to our next  destination. The Great Tetons!  But this will have to wait till tomorrow because tonight we are guests of the Arapaho Indians at the Wind River Reservation.  Not in a tepee but in their brand new casino / hotel. Max found out that Wyoming allows gambling at 18 and studied Blackjack strategies for the last part of the trip today.

A more cheerful view of Devil's Tower!
A place far more demonic than Devil's Tower...

  1. What you didn't go climb Devil's Tower? We stayed at the Devil's Tower Lodge B&B a few years ago, it is run by Frank Sanders, experienced climber. He got my son Kevin a little more than 1/2 way up the tower..big problem was he did not have climbing shoes big enough for Kevin which hampered further upward progress. Maybe on your way back?? 2. Go Max! Gambling is an invaluable skill and just think of all those naïve and possible cash-rich dorm-mates you’ll be able to ‘befriend’ in a couple of months.
