Day 10

This morning we got an early start and hiked up to a beautiful glacier lake. The trail started with us having to navigate around many fallen trees that came down during last weeks storms. After two hours of steady ascent through the alpine forest we reached our destination, Sherbrooke Lake. Famous Lake Louise was next on our agenda. What a difference! While we experienced Sherbrooke Lake all by our self - just finding a parking place seemed to take an eternity at Lake Louise. After a hearty lunch platter of cured game meats (elk salami, air dried buffalo, peppered duck...) we visited nearby Moraine Lake. It was so popular that the police had to close the road because of overcrowding! After a miserable hike past miles of parked cars we took the Icefield Road towards Jasper. This road takes you from Lake Lousise through parts of Banff and Jasper naional parks along beautiful glacier lakes and towering mountain tops. As we drove up to Athabasca Glacier we saw markers that showed the extent of the glacier all the way back to 1908. The amount that the glacier has receded was enormous, and a nearby sign revealed the shocking fact that since 1880, the glacier has lost 60% of its volume! For dinner, we had some great Korean food in Jasper and then went on west to stay the night in McBride.
