Day 20/21

The Kenai peninsula is known as the playground of Alaska, and we've spent the last two days having our share of fun here. It all started when we took the ferry from Valdez to Whittier. The views on the boat ride were spectacular and I saw a whale jump out of the water! (Couldn't get a photo in time sorry). Not to mention comfortable seats and plenty of space- I highly recommend it! In Whittier, we had a great meal of fried halibut fresh from the harbor, and then continued on our way to Homer. The only problem was, the way out of Whittier by land is through a dark train tunnel through the mountains. Every hour alternates between train traffic and car traffic. Feeling brave, I choose to drive it. The passage was a bit narrow for my liking, but I made it through. That night we arrived at Homer, a "beach town" on the end of the Kenai. We drove out to the long spit that extends into the ocean to get an amazing view of the ocean, mountains, and some bald eagles. The next day we drove back up the peninsula to the little town of Hope. It was an old gold rush town, and today is home to about 200 people. The food at the local restaurant was delicious, again more fresh fish, but even better was the live band. Just a couple of guys playing on the deck of the restaurant. They had incredible musical talent and were a blast to listen to. Tonight we are staying outside of Anchorage, and getting ready for our last few days in Alaska.
