Day 13

We got some of the best pictures yet! Grizzly bears, black bears, bison, waterfalls- all in one day! First stop was Smith Falls, a short but steep hike next to the hot springs. I wasn't sure I could make it down the slope leading to falls with the added pressure of being attacked by mosquitoes on all sides, but eventually I did it. The view was well worth it. As we prepared ourselves for another long day of driving, I never expected the road to be so eventful. It started with the grizzly bear. We were driving along when on the side of the road is a giant brown shape munching on the wildflowers. As we get closer and closer with our car, the bear remains indifferent to our presence. He glances up at us for a moment and then goes back to his lunch. After a bit of waiting, the bear runs out of flowers of his side of the road so obviously he goes to search our side. I still freaked out even though we were in the car, but we got some great photos. I was sure nothing could top that until we saw two black bear less that half an hour later! And then a giant herd of bison! This really is better than going to the zoo! Just as intriguing as the wildlife was the quirky signpost forest. People from all over the world bring signs from their hometown to the town of Watson Lake in order to display it in a "forest" of signs. Weird but really cool! My dad was proud that Germany was well represented. We are staying the night in Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon- where we just had a great dinner of fried Alaskan halibut and smoked salmon. Afterward we saw a live band and had a drink at the local bar (just Coke for me!). I could really see myself living here!

This is my greatest photographic accomplishment!
